Chapter 10
Ford stared miserably at the sketches of Stella. After a sleepless night, he had pulled every last one of them from the office and spread them across the kitchen table. Why, he didn’t really know. He would never see her again – at least not as her friend – and staring at his drawings of her was pure torture.
The doorbell rang and he glanced at his naked upper body before trudging down the hallway. The doorbell rang again and he shouted, “Who is it?”
“Ford, it’s me. Let me in.”
He froze in place at the sound of Stella’s voice.
“Uh, now is not a good time, Stella,” he said desperately.
His eyes widened as he heard the key in the lock. Shit! Why the fuck did he give her a spare key? The door opened and Stella stepped into the hallway. She was wearing yoga pants, a thick sweatshirt, no makeup and her hair was in a damp bun on top of her head. She looked a little tired and a lot angry.
“Stella, this isn’t a good time.”
She kicked off her boots. “We need to talk, Ford. You can’t keep running away every time something sexual happens between us. Listen, I get that you’re not into chubby girls but – “
“What?” He interrupted. “Stella, I’m not – “
“I know you’re not,” she snapped, “and I’m fine with it. Well, maybe not fine with it but that’s only because I’m tired of wanting someone who doesn’t want me.”
“You were drunk last night,” he said. “What kind of friend would I be if I took advantage of that?”
“I wasn’t drunk,” she said. “I had two glasses of wine, Ford. You think I kissed you because I was drunk?”
She started toward him. “Listen, we need to talk about what happened last night and I’m not taking no for an answer.”
“Stella, this isn’t a good time. Can we talk later?” He blocked her path to the kitchen when she tried to step past him and she stared suspiciously at him.
“What are you hiding back there?”
“Nothing,” he said. “I’m not hiding anything.”
“Do you have another woman here?” Stella’s eyes narrowed and her cheeks flushed bright red. She eyed his naked chest and messy hair as he blinked in confusion at her.
“Another woman? What? Uh, no, that’s not it. I just – “
“It’s fine, I’ll go,” Stella said. “We can talk another time.”
He sagged against the wall with relief. “Okay, thanks. I’ll, um, call later and – son of a bitch!”
Stella had darted past him, sliding her ample body against his before squirming free and running to the kitchen. “If there’s another woman in here, I’m going to kick your ass, Ford Taylor! Do you hear me? After what happened last night, you had better not…”
He chased after her as her voice died out and he made a harsh groan of embarrassment. Stella was standing in the kitchen and staring at the sketches on the table. Feeling sick to his stomach, he cracked his knuckles nervously.
“Stella, I’m sorry,
